Congrats to Wayne Schmidt on his completion of the 2025 Vino Fondo “Mondo Fondo” in Defiance, MO on May 17, 2025! The race aims to bring European cycling traditions to Missouri and includes a 100 mile ride with a 4835′ climb through Missouri Wine Country.
On February 5, Schmidt began his first day of training when he was hit by a car. He suffered injuries to his ribs, pelvis and neck, causing pain and numbness, and was
unable to ride for four weeks.
He started physical therapy at Sports Medicine & Training Center (SMTC) one week after his collision.
“The PT really accelerated the healing of the ribs and over time brought back full movement to my neck and reduced the tingling in my leg,” Schmidt said.
With a strong will to get back on the bike, Schmidt was consistent with his PT sessions with Scott and the SMTC staff. Soon he was able to get back on the bike!
“I eventually got myself into a position where I thought I could attempt the ride,” Schmidt said. “As it turned out, I ended up winning my age group.” Congrats Wayne on your win – what a comeback story!
